  • Tutorial Video for First Time Users

    Choose your state boating safety course to get more information on your state's specific requirements for boaters.

  • Registering
    Click to Register
    1. Before you can start the course you need to create an account with a username and password.
    2. Click the link under First time users or under the Login button that says register here to create an account as shown in the image above.
    3. You should choose a username that is easy to remember, at least 8 characters long and contains only letters and numbers. Do not include spaces in your username or password.

    You will need to enter your name, contact information and identifying information which your state requires us to collect**

    ** We don't use the information you enter for anything other than providing boating certificates to you, the end user. If you elect to receive more information from BoatU.S. your name and contact information will be used to send you information about BoatU.S. services, and will not be shared with any third parties whatsoever.

  • Choosing Your Course
    Click the apple icon to enroll in a course
    1. Once you have submitted your registration, click Continue to go to the Course Catalog.
    2. Open the Boating Safety Course Catalog and scroll down to the state course that you want to take.
    3. Click on the name of the course to open the Course Description page.
    4. On the Course Description page you will see a red apple icon that looks like image above. Click the icon to enroll.
  • Worksheets
    Worksheets will be listed under Course Materials
    1. Once you have clicked the Enroll Icon, the page will now show the worksheets listed under Course Materials. These sheets are meant as a printed study guide to help follow along and are not required.
  • Starting the Course

    1. Navigate to your My Account page:

    Click My Account to Access your courses

    All of your courses will be listed on your My Account screen which can be accessed at any time from the dark gray navigation bar across the top of the page.


    2. Launching your Course:

    Launch your course by clicking the green Go button

    Easily launch your course by following these four simple steps:

    1. From your My Account page click the green GO button for the course you want to start as shown in the image above.
    2. This will take you to the Lesson Menu for that course. From here you can select the lesson you wish to launch.
    3. Click the green GO button again to open a lesson.
    4. Once you click the GO button to launch a lesson, it will open in a new window leaving the original window still open and behind it.

    3. Lesson Information:

    The Lesson Menu shows you which lessons you've completed and which are left.

    Lessons that display a blue GO button have already been completed. Green buttons indicate that they are incomplete.

    Also, if a lesson displays Failed and a score of 0% it means that the lesson quiz is incomplete. Once the quiz is completed your actual score will be displayed.

  • Saving Progress
    A lesson can be closed in 2 ways, the red X in the top right corner or the Save & Close button.

    Most lesson pages will have a Save & Close button in the bottom right corner of the page which you can use to close the lesson and save your progress.

    You can also click the X in the top right corner of the browser window to close the window and save your progress (the same way you would close any window).

    You can close a lesson at any time to save your progress and come back later to complete it. When you reopen a lesson you have already viewed, it will automatically open to the last page you viewed.

  • Quizzes

    Passing a quiz:

    Checkmarks on the left navigation pane mark your progress

    You will be required to PASS all of the lessons contained in a course in order to complete that course.

    If you fail a quiz, you will have to review each page of content in that lesson before the lesson will allow you to retake the quiz.

    If you fail a quiz simply close the lesson and reopen it to reset the quiz. You will have to spend the required minimum time on each page again if you fail a quiz.

    Be sure that you have viewed all the pages in a lesson by looking for a green check mark next to each section heading and page title on the left navigation pane as seen above.

    There is no limit on the number of times you can retake a lesson quiz, you may retake a lesson as many times as you need to until you pass.

    Some states apply a maximum number of times which you can fail the Final Exam (if applicable) before the entire course will automatically reset requiring you to start over at the beginning. Be sure to read your course description and the first page of the first lesson for more details on this and other state-specific requirements.

  • "Running Courseware" Error

    If you see this message on screen, it means that your lesson window is still open but it may be minimized or behind the running courseware window. Don't panic, just look on the taskbar at the bottom of your screen for the second window titled BoatU.S. Foundation - Online Boating Safety Course and click on it to bring it back up.

  • Certificates
    Print your certificate of completion from your My Account screen.

    Instructions for Users:

    1. Once you have completed all included lessons for a course you will be awarded a certificate of completion (if applicable) which you can print yourself from your My Account screen. It will appear on the left under the calendar as shown in the image (Figure A) above.
    2. Click on your state name to bring up your options (Figure B). To pbtain a paper copy of your certificate click "Email Certificate: Free PDF".
    3. After you choose "Email Certificate", a PDF copy will be emailed directly to you for your use. Please check your junk mail, as it may get routed there.
  • Time Requirements

    There is a minimum time you are required to spend in the course, there is no maximum time limit. If you are in the middle of a lesson and need to leave, just click SAVE & CLOSE and the system will save your place and when you come back it will open to the page you were last viewing. Do not leave a lesson open and inactive for more than a few minutes. You will risk being automatically logged out and losing your progress so far.

  • Price

  • How much does the course cost?

    The BoatU.S. Foundation is a free NASBLA approved course.When you finish, you can print your certificate on your own printer or order a printed paper certificate($8) or plastic card($13) for a fee. Some states will charge additional fees to issue you a permanent state ID verifying completion of a boating safety course. Be sure to read your state's Mandatory Eduation Requirements for more information.

  • How long will it take to receive the printed certificate/card that I ordered?

    Please allow 10-14 business days for delivery. Please make sure all information is correct before purchasing. If you have not received your certificate/card in this time frame, please check that your address is listed correctly in your account. If your information is incorrectly entered you will need to purchase an additional card.

  • What if my state doesn't approve online courses?

    Though your state may not approve online courses we encourage you to use our material as a studying aid for a classroom course and proctored exam

  • Why am I learning about things that don't pertain to my style of boating or the waters I boat on?

    The National Association of State Boating Law Administrator (NASBLA), the organization that oversees boating courses and course content, requires a variety of topics to be covered in every boating safety course. This extra material helps to round out your experience and could be useful should you find yourself boating in a different area or on a different type of craft in the future.

  • About Certificates & Cards

  • How long is my certificate valid?

    Your boating safety certificate will never expire. It is valid for life. In some states, they will issue a permanent education card.

  • Does my certificate allow me to operate any boat?

    Check your state requirements for specifics about requirements for PWC vs other boats. Some states require classroom courses for PWC operation but have no requirements for other boats. On the courses page choose your state under State Boating Safety Course to learn about your state's requirements. View State Requirements →

  • Will I receive a certificate of completion when I finish my course?

    Not all courses will automatically award a certificate of completion. Check the course description to find out if you are eligible to receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course.

  • What if I don't have a printer? How do I get my certificate?

    Instructions for Users Without a Printer:

    1. Once you have completed all included lessons for a course you will be awarded a certificate of completion (if applicable) which you can have mailed directly to you. To access mailing options navigate to your My Account screen. Click on your state name as it appear on the left under the calendar as shown in the image above (Figure A).
    2. After you click on your state name your mailing options will appear in a smaller window (Figure B). To have us mail you a paper certificate or hard card for a nominal fee of $8.00 or $13.00. Click on "Purchase Certificate or Card".
    3. Once you choose "Purchase", a separate window will pop-up and you will be asked to enter your billing information (Figure C).
    4. Please verify that your address is correct as its listed in the window before entering your information. Once you have confirmed your information is correct and you have completed the form click "Submit Payment". A printed paper copy of your certificate will be mailed to you. Please note it may take 10-14 days for you to recieve your certificate of completion.
  • How do I get my state specific boating card?

    If your state requires you to have a state-issued boating card you may be required to send in a copy of your boating safety certificate along with a state application form and a small fee. Check your state's Mandatory Education Requirements for further details.

  • I took the course a while ago, how do I re-print my certificate?

    If you took the course prior to August 1, 2010, to re-print your certificate at any time, follow these steps:

    1. Click on the course you originally took below. (If you cannot remember which course you took please call us at 800-245-2628)
    2. Enter you email address and first name (make sure you enter the email you used when you registered with the course originally).
    3. Click Get Previous Certificate and follow the prompts

    If you took the course after August 1, 2010, to re-print your certificate at any time, follow these steps:

    1. Return to the BoatUS Foundation ELearning Center at https://elearning.boatus.org/.
    2. Enter you username and password. Once you have logged in your certificate will be located in your My Account on the left side underneath the calendar.
    3. Click on your states name and select a print option.
  • I took an online course, but I don't remember which provider I took it with.

    The BoatU.S. Foundation Online Course is free. If you paid for the course you took it was offered by a different provider. If you're sure you took the course with us, but still can't log in or find your old certificate, give us a call at 1-800-245-2628, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Eastern Time.

    Be sure you are using the newest version of your browser visit http://outdatedbrowser.com/en to upgrade to the newest version. This course is not compatible with any current smartphone browsers and should not be attempted on an iPad, iPhone or other mobile device.

  • I am using a dial-up internet connection; will I still be able to take this course?

    If you are using a dial-up Internet connection, wireless broadband (such as Clear or your cell phone carrier's wireless Internet service) or satellite Internet service, you should Save & Close frequently during each lesson to avoid an inadvertent loss of data. Every 15 to 20 pages is recommended.

    If you are using a WiFi-enabled laptop that receives a signal from a wireless router that is plugged into a wall this does not apply.

  • I made a typo in my name when I registered, how can I fix that?

    You can change some of your personal information by clicking on 'My Profile' from your My Accounts page.If your telephone number is not entered in the correct format, it will create an error. Phone numbers should be 7 numbers only without added punctuation or dashes. For example, 4105558974. Note that you cannot change your first and last name or date of birth. If you need to change any of these, contact us through our comments form located at the bottom of this page.

  • How do I enroll in a course?
    Click the apple icon to enroll in a course
    1. Once you have submitted your registration, click Continue to go to the Course Catalog.
    2. Open the Course Catalog and select the course that you want to take.
    3. Click on the name of the course to open the Course Description page.
    4. On the Course Description page you will see a white PayPal button above the course description. Click the button to continue.
  • I have a promotion code, how do I use it?

    On the course description page click the buy now button and enter your promotion code into the box in the pop-up window.

  • How should I begin my course?

    Navigate to your My Account page:

    Click My Account to Access your courses

  • I only see "Running Courseware." What does this mean?

    While your lesson is open, the screen open behind it will say Running Courseware.

    Most courses must be completed within 60 to 90 days of enrollment. When a course expires you will no longer see it on your my account screen.
