Reel In & Recycle
With funding from the NOAA Marine Debris program and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, we have helped establish a network of over 2000 monofilament recycling bins across the country to make proper disposal of monofilament more accessible.

The Reel In and Recycle Program is one component of our efforts to make our waterways healthier and safer for boaters and wildlife alike.
Improperly disposed of fishing line is major threat to both coastal and inland fishing areas. It threatens marine life, damages boats, and fouls propellers. Recycling your old fishing line is one of the best actions you can take to solve these issues.
About our Fishing Line Recycling Program
Since 2007, BoatUS has worked to make recycling old fishing line easier. We launched our Fishing Line Recycling program with grants from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and the NOAA’s Marine Debris Program.
Since then, our organization has built more than 2,000 recycling bins for fishing spots across the country and assisted other organizations and individual to build over 11,000 more. That’s enabled anglers to properly dispose of more than 20,000 miles (and counting) of fishing line. Through this program, our goal is to preserve the water environments we love for future generations to enjoy.
We accomplish this by providing motivated fishing enthusiasts with the support and guidance they need to get involved.
BoatUS provides signs and decals for fishing line recycling bins. This has led to the creation of more than 13,000 fishing line recycling bins across the country. Together, we’re already making a huge impact on our favorite marine environments.
Get Involved Today
There’s still more work that needs to be done to ensure the future of our waterways. If you’re ready to do your part, consider getting involved in our Fishing Line Recycling Program today.
The easiest way to do so is by volunteering to build and maintain a fishing line recycling location at a fishing spot near you. The process is very straightforward. Simply use the video on this page to construct your own fishing line recycling bin. Then, install that bin in a high traffic fishing area near you.
When the recycling bin is full, separate any trash and send the collected line to Berkley Conservation for processing at this address:
