When we started 2020, we were remodeling our Annapolis office space, looking forward to expanding our on-water training, and were ready for a promising year. Things came to a crashing halt in early March, as Covid hit the U.S. One day we were making travel plans for spring conferences, the next day we were trying to figure out how to have everyone work from home.
We really did not have an idea how things would pan out—as it happened, boating turned out to be one of the primary activities that people were able to do during the pandemic. While on-water training was put on hold, thousands of people took up our online offerings new to boating. We were swamped! The increased use of our services, the remote nature of the work force and the restrictions placed on everyone by the pandemic forced us to reexamine how we conducted business—things that worked pre-Covid simply had to be changed to meet the current customer needs and the realities of the work environment.
Chris
We re-worked the Online Courses to make them easier for students to navigate, which helped reduced our staff customer support workload. We shifted on-water training from an event-based model where Foundation staff attended, to using partners to host and do the training. And LOTS of using Zoom, Microsoft Teams, WebEx and every other form of distance communication you can think of. Fortunately the Foundation has a very talented and resilient staff—truly the best in boating! We also invested heavily in technology to help manage the increased number of people we were helping on a day-to-day basis. We learned how to communicate and work differently, and we’ve emerged better for it.
So the Pandemic was certainly an interesting time for us—It introduced many new people to our services, it forced us to change out of inefficient processes, and how to work with a remote staff. We have emerged a much better organization, as I hope you will see in our annual report.

It had a devastating effect on cruising life when marinas were closed, waterway access was restricted and social distancing was encouraged. However, we saw record-breaking numbers of people turning to our online resources and education while at home. Even while working from home, we continued to educate boaters everyday!

On-Water training at the boat showON WATER TRAINING
The BoatUS On-Water Training program made a dramatic shift in structure due to the COVID-19 pandemic and emerged in a stronger, more scalable position. Travel restrictions and local ordinances forced us to reexamine our model and focus on a partnership approach. This allowed us to leverage our marketing reach to drive students to our partners. Ultimately this has dramatically increased our reach, while slashing our costs.

In 2020, we launched our Recast and Recycle Design Competition aimed at inspiring the designers and inventors around the world to come up with new and innovative ways to recycle used fishing line and soft baits. We chose the three top prizes from among more than 120 entrants as well as 4 honorable mentions.

We are always looking to support our partners and other organizations. We created the BoatUS Foundation Resource Kit so others can download and post mission related content directly to your channels. The portal includes images, infographics, sample social posts, links and more!

Our Course Taker Completion Journey has helped increase our completion rates and enhance our course taker experience. The journey starts off with an immediate welcome email that includes all of the information they need to complete the course. This journey is customized to the individual. Students only receive emails that pertain to them. It allows us to stay connected with students and educate more students.
Project Overview
Our team created a Certificate Look-Up portal that past, present and future students can use to retrieve their boating certificate at any time after completion. Students simply type in their information and can download and print their certificate at home. There is also an option to order a plastic card in many states.

The Foundation now offers for rent the world’s smallest PLB, about the size of a Tic-Tac container, for boaters and adventurers who go beyond cell phone and or VHF radio range.
BOAT DONATION PROGRAM
The donation of boats to our non-profit charity was a welcomed source of additional funds during the COVID outbreak. Initially, the number of inquiries dipped, and the sales of vessels in our inventory slowed as marinas, sales lots, and showrooms temporarily closed their doors to visitors looking either to donate, or purchase a boat that had been donated. However, boat sales picked up as people were looking to engage in outdoor sports and activities. Inventory of used boats became strained especially small craft, so our focus shifted to getting larger donations, taking them in and making improvements to them.
