The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is an innovative leader promoting safe, clean and responsible boating. The Foundation provides educational outreach directly to boaters and supports partner organizations nationwide.
With millions of boaters on the water, our aim is to reduce accidents and fatalities, increase stewardship of our waterways and keep boating a safe and enjoyable pastime. The BoatUS Foundation is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our work is primarily funded by grants and individual donations.

OWT - Norwalk Boat ShowBOAT DONATION PROGRAM
The BoatU.S. Foundation’s boat donation program continues to grow in terms of volume and net revenue year after year. Although donors have the option to specify a Foundation program to support with the funds once their boat sells, the majority of donors direct us to use the money where it is needed most.
Donors report a variety of reasons for donating their boat, from moving up in boat size to getting out of boating altogether. However, a theme that is common among all donors is their trust in BoatU.S. Foundation to process their donation and provide the necessary services from transportation to storage to brokerage, until their boat finds a happy new home.
Occasionally the Foundation will accept a boat that can be used to directly support the Foundation’s mission as a product testing platform or for new boater training. For example, a donated 22’ center console powerboat turned out to be an ideal model to test our on-water boat safety training curriculum, with real students at the helm who were new to boating.
Nearly 80% of boats donated are powerboats and the other 20% are sailboats, which is consistent with the breakdown of the national makeup of registered boats. Boats that are accepted are generally in good condition, averaging about 25 years old and are typically around 26 feet in length.
Online Learning
Big changes coming to the Free Online Boating Safety Course
Content
Knowing that storytelling is the gateway to behavior change among adult learners, we set out to wrap our critical boating safety material in a series of stories about everyday boaters and their experiences on the water as well as their misadventures.
Design
This new course will comply with the NASBLA revised policy on interactivity in online boating safety courses. The new policy allows us to remove the page timers and allow students more freedom to complete the course.
Platform
This new interactive course also requires a new platform. Work began on a new Training Delivery System (TDS) mid-2018 with an intended launch date of late 2019. It will be significantly more stable and allow multiple courses.
ON WATER TRAINING
The BoatUS On-Water Training Program began its second year of pilots in 2018 and saw great success with 19 completed events. The goal of the program is to cultivate growth in the boating industry by drawing in new participants, while fostering safe boating practices with existing boaters. Through partnerships with Freedom Boat Club, the National Safe Boating Council, West Marine, and the National Marine Manufacturers Association, we were able to test different formats, with different partners.
John
Intro to Boating"I was considering getting a boat. Having no prior boating experience, I took your on-water course to see if I could handle it. After taking the course I decided to go ahead with a boat purchase. After purchasing the boat my family and I took your online boat safety course. We are now on the water and getting more proficient every day."
Karyna
Intro to Boating"To me it was a great educational hands on experience. The instructor was always aware of our goals for this course and he went the extra mile to accomplish our goal."
Chrissy
Women Making Waves"Captain Holly was precise, patient and kind as we learned various boating techniques! Great experience."
Pete
Precision Docking and Boat Handling"Great experience can’t wait to come back."

Green Cleaner - Boat Soaps
View ProjectProject Overview
In 2018, BoatUS Foundation began working with North Carolina Coast Reserves - Rachel Carson Reserve, TowBoatUS Beaufort, Town of Beaufort, NC and NOAA Marine Debris Program to document the impact of a large scale marine debris removal project in Beaufort Harbor. The project is funded in part by a grant from the NOAA Marine Debris Program. The project will be wrapping up in 2019 with educational and outreach videos.
Project Overview
The Grassroots Grants program has provided over a million dollars in funding over the last 25 years. This year, the Foundation awarded a grant to Rhode Island Marine Trade Association Foundation and Rhode Island Sea Grant to pilot fiberglass recycling in a zero waste process. This pilot will be completed in 2019 with program feasibility and Best Management Practices to tackle the disposal issues of the aging fiberglass boats.
Project Overview
In July 2018, the BoatU.S. Foundation published findings that concentration, does in fact make a difference.
Our baseline was to measure participant brainwaves pre-training, and then introduce them to a method called SCAN, an acronym for Search, Concentrate, Analyze, and Negotiate. We also introduced some obstacles along the way to see if concentration coincided with events, post training.
To help us with the interpretation of data, we enlisted a neurosurgeon to confirm what we were seeing on the water in terms of participant behavior, and the corresponding brain waves recorded by the headset. Simply, maintaining proper lookout procedures, as specified through SCAN training, is effective in decreasing distraction and increasing vigilance in small-boat operators. There’s more promotion to be done, so look for more on S.C.A.N. in 2019.

Project Overview
In 2009, we first tested “green” cleaners that made claims such as they were biodegradable and are environmentally safe. Since then, many new products have come to market so we decided it was time to test again in 2018 to see if they stand up to clean and green claims using a recently donated bowrider which was a candidate for a good cleaning.
This time, we tested nine products and used them as directed and also mixed up two home-made recipes found on the internet. We used the products as directed. Some required mixing and others you used straight out of the bottle. We used the products on both smooth and non-skid surfaces to see how they performed. To test the green claims, we sent our products to a lab to learn a bit about their chemical make-up to help purchasers make informed decisions.
A full write up and results will be available in the summer 2019 issue of BoatU.S. Magazine.
